Cute dessert art! |
Sunday: The total goals thus far is 6. I plan to wear a ESP jersey today so take note!
The theme song is a pop song? |
12:00: Kickoff. Love that the kickoff times start exactly at the top of the hour though I was worried they wouldn't get all the people and pomp and circumstance off the field in less than 4 minutes, but they did.
20': Very careful game thus far. Will ENG's five minutes of brilliance each game show up? Love ESP's #24 bobbing hair. You can tell FOX (or the UEFA feed) is not showing the game in 4K but it's okay. You would wish these big events would be in 4K but it is much clearer, especially on far shots. These countries are a rematch of the Women's World Cup 2023 where ESP beat ENG 1-0.
31': Well, two golden boot hopefuls have a yellow with ENG's Kane and ESP's Olmo (both tied for lead with 3 goals) each picking one up in quick succession. UEFA changed the criteria, eliminating assists and goals/minute as tiebreakers, which means we could have 5 or more Golden Boot winners. Also, Copa inconsistencies continue as the Final will now have extra time (none of the previous knockout matches had extra time) before going to the penalty shootout.
Half (+2 stoppage): ENG had a chance on a direct free kick and managed to get a shot on goal, which usually takes ENG 80 or so minutes to do so. Tom J and Rob C are happy with a goalless draw thus far to stay in contention for 4th place. Michael W needs 3+ goals if ESP wins the match to claim 4th.
47': Big ESP sub to start (Rodri out) but ESP came out and scored early to take a 1-0 lead on their first shot on goal (doing the ENG thing). Nico Williams scored ESP's 14th goal of the tourney. The crowd is now alive. Total goals tiebreaker is now 7.
61': ENG's Southgate has been accused of doing his subs too late, well, early on Kane will come off for Watkins.
68': Now ESP's captain Morata comes off. Both captains to start the game are now on the bench.
69': Two successive punches by the ENG GK keeps ESP off the board. MLS used to keep a stat called "catch/punch" and those were fun to record on the stat sheet.
73': And we are tied! Young Cole Palmer nails a shot outside the box to suddenly put ENG tied 1-1. For the fourth straight match, ENG scored after allowing a goal. Total goals tiebreaker is now 8 and if there's another goal, that would eliminate Kds911-3 and Luis Enrique's Armada from a chance for 4th if ESP wins. So both have to hope for a ESP win in PSO with a 1-1 tie to nab 4th. If the game goes to extra time, ESP risks a fine for playing 17-year old Yamal past 11 pm local time (including shower, post-game).
ESP give-and-go GWG |
90': Three straight headers by ENG, one saved, one saved off the goal line by defender Olmo, and one high. 4 minutes of stoppage time.
1:53 pm: Almost 4 minutes past exactly, ref blows whistle. ESP wins their 4th Euros and ENG loses in the final twice in a row. ESP wins all 7 matches in regulation or extra time. Congrats to the winners:
1st | Jbueno | 122 | |||
2nd | Merman | 118 | |||
3rd | BigRedMessi 3 | 116 | |||
4th | Big Blue | 115 | Tie: | 10.5 | Wins total goals tiebreaker (9) |
Funny for COL they have Shakira |
3 shots at CVS Minute Clinic |
4:33 pm: Copa Final!!! Or not. Players have been taken off the field as security has been trying to get fans outside to behave before letting folks in. Kickoff pushed to at least 5:30 pm. Of course, President Biden is supposed to be speaking which is why the game will be on FS1 first, then switch to FOX.
Shades of English fans without tickets breaking into the the Euro 2021 final at Wembley (great doc on incident on Netflix, Attack on Wembley). Looks like mostly yellow shirts (COL) causing a ruckus.
5:18 pm: Kickoff now postponed to 5:45 pm and gates are open again.
5:33 pm: 12 minutes? We'll see. There is also lightning outside in the distance, so another potential complication.
5:42 pm: Match now postponed until 6:15.
6:15 pm: National anthems are starting!
6:22 pm: Kickoff!
36': Messi is injured but rolls back onto the field to stop play. That should be a yellow card, IMHO. Clever though.
45': This Copa has to be one of the worst ref'd, worst VAR'd, and worst fouling tournament. 1 minute of stoppage with a few injuries including Messi rolling onto the field for a couple minutes? CONBEMOL must really want to see Shakira and the extended 25 minute halftime show.
7:34: Start of 2nd half. Messi on the field. The Shakira show with augmented reality graphics looked really bad.
Messi out |
8:23 (or 11:23 pm local): Heading to extra time (just for the Final), the crowd is pretty subdued.
8:45 - Ref allowing a lot of play-ons and players get tackled and brought down. Only 2 fouls called in a rough first 15 minutes.
112': ARG scores! Crowd still pretty quiet, so maybe more COL fans. Martinez gets 5th goal of tournament (most) and his shot just went over the head and between the hands of the GK, who may have gone down too early.
9:09 (Monday local): After a couple minute delay by the ref for no reason, he shortly blows the whistle giving ARG back-to-back Copas with a WC title in between (ESP had back-to-back Euros with a WC in between (2008-2012)).
